One of my favorite writers is the illustrious, Elizabeth Gilbert.  Her journey to find herself made me want to set out on a journey of self-discovery.  In fact, her book Eat, Pray, Love, has been read so many times that it is now bound together by tape and rubber bands.  The journey of self can happen anywhere.  Twelve years ago, Brian and I walked through a very difficult time on top of raising a special-needs child.  I came out of that situation raw and vulnerable.  It allowed me to shed whatever shield that enveloped me. It allowed me to start living in the truth instead of this image that I believed to be authentic.

I love Elizabeth’s quote, “Embrace the glorious mess that you are.”   Embracing who I truly am allows me to accept me for me.  I am not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but I can live with that.   The beauty is that while I am flawed, there are lots of amazing qualities that I behold.   I can see the unique individual that I am and be proud.   It took me many, many years to truly love myself.  Loving myself, accepting myself, and embracing the glorious mess that is me, is the first step to loving and accepting others.   The fact is, we are all a hot mess.
