Square Peg ● Round Hole

I can remember my Dad calling my Mom’s bridge group “the hens” because of their uncanny ability to have multiple conversations while talking at very high decibels.  I laughed at his notion.   When my mother hosted, I was fascinated by these gatherings.  They really never played bridge, it was merely an excuse to talk, eat, and enjoy a cocktail or two.   It never occurred to me how important that outlet was for her.

Last night, I hosted my own “hens” event.  Gathering a variety of women.  Some I have deep intimate relationships with while others I am interested in knowing better.  We talked loudly, I might add, and enjoyed some food and drink.  We didn’t solve the world’s problems, but we did share our war stories of raising teenagers.   We laughed.  We ate.  We laughed some more.  It was a few hours spent where we left our lives and basked in other women’s energy.

It is important to have those women friends.   As I reminded a friend this morning, the beauty is we never have to do anything alone…..ever.    So, while my father considered the “hens” quite annoying, I always remember that afterwards, my mother was lighter and had a sense of peace about her.   She needed those women to lift and empower her.   It was a fuel to keep her moving forward.
