It is so easy for me to look back on my life and overthink the past. All of us have been in the throes of regret, but the choices we make might are always expanding our growth….even if it doesn’t appear that way. For the last several years, my guys have left after Christmas to visit family in Florida. Early on, I decided that I would stay behind simply because I dislike traveling at Christmas. My decision raised some questions and a few eyebrows, but the benefits for all of us have been tremendous.
The last week of the year for me is a wonderful time of reflection. I clean out my blessings jar on December 31 to rejoice in all of the wonderful things that have happened throughout the year. Counting those blessings puts all the good stuff in the forefront while allowing the more difficult things to stay where they belong…..in the past.
I also like to use this time to reconnect with friends, enjoy some quiet time, and do things on my terms. It is a revitalization for my spirit as I close down another year. Do I miss my guys? Absolutely. By the end of the week, I am anxious for their arrival and ready to start a new year with my three favorite people.
In the beginning, it was sort of an oddity that I wasn’t spending time with my family over a holiday break, but I think I am really on to something. It is a wonderful opportunity for those three guys to spend time together without me. It allows my husband to be with his father and stepmother without me. Surely, we all know that the dynamic is different when a spouse is involved.
The outlook for the new year is pretty grand and I am looking forward to creating something amazing out of a blank canvas. This past year has delivered some pretty astounding gifts and blessings. The difficult times were laced with some excellent opportunities to do something different. I can honestly say that 2015 was not sprinkled with regrets. That my friends, is the ideal way of wrapping up another year with gusto.
