So, here I am again, perusing Facebook and detaching from the life around me. Sometimes it is simply a way to pass the time if I am waiting for a kid or at a doctor’s appointment. Other times it is a way to waste my time either to escape something unpleasant, or simply because I have no motivation to do anything else. Don’t get me wrong, I love social media. There is an essence of community, but with anything, I take what I like and leave the rest.
Here are some of the things I detest. There is the person who is ALWAYS saying how great their significant other is and displaying all kinds of “proof”. One status of that is great, but the more that is posted, you begin to believe that there is more to the story and possibly, Prince Charming is more like Al Bundy.
Then there are the “vague” posters. You know, the ones who say things like, “prayers please…..”. I like to know what I am praying for, so a little more information is appreciated. You see, I will pray for your Aunt Betty since she is ill, but I am not going to pray for you to make your flight to the Bahamas while I am freezing my ass off at home. I have limitations to the extent of sending positive vibes.
The best posts, I think are the ones who copy and paste these ridiculous request with passive-aggressive insinuations that state “only a few of my friends will do this” or “I’ll understand if you don’t participate”. These are the people I “unfollow” and eventually, “defriend”. Oh, and please, those laughable posts telling you so and so is giving away a shitload of money, all you have to do is copy and paste. I do believe that social media has made many seemingly smart people, incredibly stupid.
Imagine navigating real life conversations the way we troll Facebook. Don’t get me wrong, I love the ability to connect with individuals that I don’t get to see on a regular basis. I enjoy the sense of community, but I don’t enjoy the endless nonsense that is fueled by our own media that is simply lacking in substance. Now, since I have written this I will dive back into the pool of social media while the time on the clock ticks away.
