“So, why are you taking this class?  You have a degree in writing, you having a writing job, so isn’t that enough?”   This is what I was asked this morning as my classmate and I walked into our writing workshop.  Her questions were not ugly in demeanor, but rather, inquisitive.  I have asked myself a thousand times the same question.

My thinking is that I have the foundation to proceed with publication of my various works. I shouldn’t need to reach outside of my four walls to gain help in the journey.  However, my “bad neighborhood” referring to my chaos in my head, seemingly doesn’t have all the answers, and I am a firm believer that when you ask for help, the path to your destination is a little smoother.   Taking this workshop not only has given me a new spark in my writing, but it has changed the direction of my finished product.   While I still don’t have a clear picture of what it will look like, I feel like I am better suited to move forward.

I am in the process of building a bridge that will unify my knowledge of writing with the actual final product.   Also, by engaging with other writers, I have been given the honor of hearing their stories and identifying with their struggles.  It would be a lie if I weren’t a little bit euphoric after our conversation.    I think we all yearn to be validated in whatever capacity.   By simply questioning my presence, she validated the very reason I was there…….to find my writing voice, and it gets louder and louder by the day.
