Well, the big birthday is upon us and the weekend is filled with celebration.  Today, my mother turns 85 and to honor her I have lined up a bevy of wonderful surprises.  Last night, we took her to dinner and was joined by my “bonus” sister who came in from Florida.  Tonight, we will gather with around 25 of her favorite people to celebrate her….all a surprise.

When I started planning this party, it became apparent that it was more than just a milestone birthday.  The people that are gathering have seen her through a barrage of life moments.   Some have been her friend since she was six, while others have entered in various stages.   The group as a whole have been a consistent presence.

So, the party is a celebration of people that continue to show up for her.    We are gathering a group of phenomenal individuals who love and accept my mother just the way she is.  For that very reason, I am so grateful and honored to be able to open my home to them.   There aren’t words to describe the gratitude because these same people have helped me navigate caring for her.    It really does take a village, so tonight I will raise my glass to them.
