Blurry eyed and armed with coffee, I survived the apocalypse or what others refer to as 4th of July fireworks.   Normally, Presley is the only one affected by the commotion, but last night she had company…..Daisy, the cats, Bailey and even Brian was a tad annoyed.   The shaking of the house, the loud bombs that went on for hours, seemed unending.  I posted my frustration on Facebook and found comfort with commiserating with others.  That is until one comment.

One comment accused me of being “unpatriotic” and to “get over it” which really struck a nerve with me.  You can call me a lot of things, but unpatriotic is not one of them.  Just for kicks and giggles, let’s explore what the word means.  Simple put, it is the act of not being loyal your country.  You know, I love a good fireworks show, but I have strong compassion for those veterans, who suffer from PTSD and all the animals who are terribly frightened by the arsenal.  There are silent fireworks that could replace the unending barrage of sound and still allow everyone to enjoy the spectacle of color in the sky.

So, let’s get back to the unkind reply to my post.   Somehow we have allowed name calling to become acceptable on social media.   You can have a different opinion, but honestly, calling me unpatriotic is a bit over the top and well, rude.   I refrained from correcting his sentence structure and letting him know about the rules of capitalization, so I have that going for me.   In the spirit of patriotism which infers loyalty, I have unfriended this individual.  As so many on my friend list, he was merely an acquaintance.
