This month I celebrate nine years freelancing with our local newspaper with my column, The Home of the Week. What you probably don’t know is that I almost didn’t take the job. When a friend alerted me to the opening, my initial instinct was to run the other direction. Staying where it was comfortable instead of taking a plunge into the unknown. This opportunity propelled me to a point in my life that has opened a lot of doors for me. Grateful, I didn’t ignore the chance.
It is true that the most life-changing choices are the ones that make you work the hardest. They demand that you show up! It takes courage to step out into the unknown, but I can’t imagine my life any other way. I didn’t think I was good enough to write on a public forum for a large metropolitan newspaper, but here I am. The people that I have met and the community outreach that I have been able to do because of this platform has been uplifting and extremely gratifying.
So, in the spirit of being grateful, I extend that to my job. The job that allows me to work from home, have an extremely flexible schedule, and the incredible people that I am honored to meet, work with, and who challenge me to a higher standard. It is a dream job. To think that I almost made a decision based on fear or thinking that I am not good enough. Instead, I took the plunge and what a ride it has been.
Those moments or opportunities that are presented to us don’t linger. They dissolve if not grabbed. So, I don’t want to close myself off because I am unwilling to be a little frightened or unsure in the process. Be open to the possibilities that great things happen when you step outside of your comfort zone.
