In less than 24 hours, we will say “farewell” to 2016. For many, this year has been a challenge for a variety of reasons. What I find courageous are those individuals, who have encountered incredible loss, set backs, obstacles, or have felt defeated in some sort of way, but have still found the strength to move forward. For me, 2016 has shown me the value of asking for help. With two surgeries (meniscus removal and then a knee replacement), I found strength in knowing that I couldn’t do it alone and that asking for help isn’t weak.
People showed up when I asked them. I was surrounded by this incredible group of individuals that helped me up when I couldn’t stand on my own two feet – literally. I only look back to the past year as an act of reflection, not as a place to reside. So much lies ahead that if I am not paying attention, I will miss it.
As the new year knocks on the door, I will be hopeful for what it holds for me. I will remember that even when difficulties arise, there is always something good to balance it out and that by being fully present, I can bask in its light. I will be more mindful that hurt people tend to hurt people and that it isn’t about me. I will remember that life happens for me not to me. I will seek solace in knowing that I can’t please everyone, but living my truth is my refuge. I will keep in mind that I am doing the best that I can and remembering that everyone else is too.
I have hope, not just about 2017, but about everything. Hope is my foundation to build upon.
