As I sit on my couch wrapped in a blanket enjoying my only cup of coffee for the day, I am basking in the quiet.  Having older children allows for that space in the early morning before they reluctantly get out of bed.  The Santa situation has dissolved or so I thought.

The night before Christmas Eve, I was telling my family what I had planned for our Christmas morning breakfast.   As the conversation proceeded, Bailey mentioned that we haven’t put cookies and milk out for Santa in a while.   WHAT?!?!?   The words stumbled out of my mouth……”Do you still believe in Santa?”.   This 22 year old young man with Down syndrome stills believes in Santa.  And why am I surprised?  After all, he believes in the Loch Ness monster, Bigfoot, Goat man, and the list goes on.    The point is that he believes in things he can’t see.  He sticks to it.  He doesn’t need to convince anyone else, he simply believes with all of his being.

Isn’t that what faith entails?  The essence of simply allowing yourself to trust in a presence that you can’t see.   I have always said that my children are my biggest teachers and in this moment, I learned that you are never too old to believe.  There is something so magical about that child.

No, I didn’t set out cookies for Santa, but I did hide presents and they will miraculously be placed as if they came out of thin air.    I have to honor the fact that he is a believer.
