Vacation, for me, is an adult timeout.   Frankly, I can’t think of a better way to invigorate oneself than to spend a little time at the beach.     Last year at this time, I was struggling to find my footing after being dismissed from my longtime writing gig.   I was moving forward but still feeling the sting.   Fast forward twelve months and I am a “wanted” writer and still in the market for additional lucrative opportunities.    I bounced back and survived.

On occasion, I will peruse the freelance writing classifieds.  Most are a waste of time, but there are a few worthy of further exploration.   Yesterday, I saw one that might be feasible and applied.  Imagine my surprise when I was contacted within fifteen minutes with an email saying “I seem like a good fit” and gave me an “test” assignment due by the end of the day on Friday.   The email also included their writer’s guide and style book.   I froze.   See, I just write.  Apparently the rules have changed and I am an old dog trying to learn new tricks.  There is something humbling about being fifty years old trying to fit into the new trends of writing.  When did writing become so complicated?   I blame it on the millennials.

What I remembered this morning as I search for a quiet place to write and research was that I am on VACATION.  This can wait.   This isn’t my primary purpose today.  Spending time with my family, reconnecting with my soul, and rejuvenating my spirit is first on my list.
