Square Peg ● Round Hole

I spend an enormous amount of time ordering items from Amazon.  Sadly, most of the items are not for me, but for my Mother.  With the decline of her eyesight and hearing, we are always looking for ways to make things easier for her.  Apparently, she didn’t get the memo because she delights in making things more difficult for us.

We have purchased pill boxes to simplify taking her medication.  I thought that was ideal but then she tried to give it back to us saying that she doesn’t understand why we bought it for her.  So, now she painstakingly takes her medication each morning bottle by bottle and complains how hard it is for her to do so.

The next item to leave was the cell phone.  The numbers on her flip phone were too small, so we decided that it might be best to purchase an alert similar to the “I have fallen and I can’t get up” mantra that would enable her to reach us with the push of a button.   She thought that was an excellent idea.  Of course, she is excited until we try to implement it. My husband spent a few hours getting it set up.  After it was all said and done, she decided that she will never wear it and if something happens, Alexa will help her contact us. I am not sure Alexa will be on board.  Alexa wouldn’t help her the other day when she asked her to call me.  Maybe Alexa is my new best friend.  Today, I will be returning yet another item to Amazon.

I have decided I am no longer in a search for things to make life easier for her.  She doesn’t want to do anything different.  Change is her nemesis.  Instead, I am going to make life easier for me.   Liquor delivery to my door, for instance.  Kidding…..sort of. I might order a helmet from Amazon to help with the head injury that I am bound to inflict as I beat my head against the wall while she apologizes for “being difficult”.

These are the moments where I struggle to remain calm.   Where the essence of my compassion is clouded by my impatience.   But, I have learned to pick my battles.  It isn’t worth making myself crazy over her reluctance to do anything different.   Today, I will simply breathe and research liquor stores that deliver.
