Yesterday, it seems an Ohio radio station decided to stop playing, “Baby, it’s Cold Outside” because it seems to be an anthem for date rape. What???? Seriously, we are now being a society so prickly that Christmas songs are now the target.
For argument sake, let’s examine the lyrics. You see this adorable couple is spending time together on a snowy evening. She is waffling about leaving because she worries what others will think, while he is encouraging her to stay. At one point, she asks, “what’s in this drink”. Personally, I think she is simply asking what the beverage is, but apparently, people think he has slipped her a roofie. (This song was released in 1949 while the drug, Rohypnol (roofie), was first developed in the 1950s by scientist, Leo Sternback. This indicates that roofie slipping is improbable….FYI.) Further down the song, she says, “ah, you’re very pushy, you know?” which doesn’t indicate anything but that he is persuading her to stay and spend more time with him. Seriously, this is beyond ridiculous. If we are going there, then “Jack Frost nipping at your nose” is pushing unwanted advances. Did anyone ask Jack Frost to do that? I hate it when Jack Frost takes liberties like that.
Let’s take this a bit further. People are disturbed by this particular holiday song, yet we have rap songs that exceed the boundaries of decency. Take the song, U.O.E.N.O by Rick Ross where raps, “Put Molly (Ecstasy) all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it, I took her home and I enjoyed it, she ain’t even know it”. Ummm……..that is blatant date rape. I don’t even have to analyze that one to identify the meaning. I am just saying that we are becoming so ultra-sensitive that our perception seems to get blurred.
I am not making light of such a serious subject. What I am doing is spotlighting the idea that maybe we should be offended by how there is so much human suffering in the world. Perhaps, be offended that people lack compassion or kindness even on a typical day. Be selective in being habitually displeased because it can harden your heart to being open to all the positive and goodness that still exists in the world.
