Square Peg ● Round Hole

When I wrote my blog yesterday, I expressed my own interpretation of a pretty significant event. It wasn’t based on a political agenda or trying to sway people. It was my take on how I view the crack in our society. It was my observation on how I view our severed community.

I write for me. Sure, I love when readers relate or when the doors for discussion open, but at the end of the day, I write what resonates with me. Yesterday, a dialogue was open on my Facebook page that features my blogs. For the most part, it was pretty tame. There were a few harsh observations and accusing tones. I, personally, could have done without a comment regarding the smirk of the young man being a “Catholic thing”. I am Catholic and the only “thing” I do know we do is the gift of “guilt”. Oh, and we don’t all like bingo….FYI. But, you know what, I honor all of the comments whether I agree with them or not.

Here is what I know. I know that when people get defensive or passionate about something there are two things happening. They are fearful that they are going to lose something or, perhaps, anxious that they won’t get something that they want. We all want to be heard and validated, but it is hard to get that when we aren’t really hearing each other. When we are too caught up in our own thoughts to give consideration to what others have said. I might have struck a nerve with what I shared, but I am powerless over other people’s reactions to it.

So, I will say it again. I am honored that you shared your thoughts and opinions with me. I am grateful that what I wrote struck a chord with many. Maybe you agree or maybe you don’t. It really doesn’t matter. What matters is that I heard you. I respect your willingness not to fall silent.
