Cats are the oddest species. They are aloof. They are strategic in their affection and they look at you with contempt when you don’t adhere to their rules. I didn’t grow up with cats, but my spouse did. We adopted our first cat right before we married and there has always been a feline presence in our home.

Oreo is a rescue who acts more like a dog than a cat. She will come to me when called unless she has better things to do like ignore me. She begs for cheese, chicken, and ham. She slaps our German Shepherd around because of Myla’s intrusive nose. She leaves piles of vomit around the house to make sure we are on task for cleaning. The biggest issue is that Oreo is addicted to menthol.

Recently, I had extreme lower back pain. Along with an anti-inflammatory, a trusty heating pad, and stretches, I opted to include some Bio Freeze to my regiment. Before I sprayed it on my lower back, I looked around to make sure Oreo didn’t see me. You laugh, but let me explain. She will stalk anyone that has showered themselves in menthol. It is like a drug to her. She gets obsessed trying to find the source. Fortunately, she was downstairs, so I quickly sprayed the cooling agent on my lower back. I exhaled feeling the relief almost immediately.

Within five minutes of me spraying it, I heard her come up the steps. She knows, I thought. I quickly put the spray back in the drawer and retreated to my room like a child in trouble with a parent. A few minutes later, she finds me. Staring at me like I am a criminal and she is the detective on the case. Act normal, I thought and then I was thinking that it is not normal to hide from a cat. Embracing my crazy is half of the battle. Anyway, she slowly approaches, jumps on the bed, and promptly sniffs the air. Her attention is drawn to the back of my shirt. She pushes her way in and sticks her face where the smell resides. Then she takes some time to sniff it and then promptly rolls around on the bed like the addict she is. Finally, she gets enough of a high that she leaves the room and I am left feeling relieved.

I don’t always hide from my cat, but when I do, next time I will close the door.
