I used to get so annoyed with Charlie Brown for being so gullible with Lucy and that damn football. I wondered why he believed that each time would be different, yet every single time, he ended up on his ass, which brings me to the point of my blog today. You see, the scams are floating around and people are biting. Honestly, my surprise isn’t about the scams or pranks regarding “not accepting a friend request for Jayden Smith or whomever the name of the day is – you can refer to snopes.com for the latest in scam surprises – or free tickets to fly Delta if you share their link. Nope my surprise is in the amount of people that don’t investigate the source first before sharing or how about just not being the bait.
Rule of thumb…….don’t accept a friend request from someone you don’t know. We tell are our kids not to talk to strangers, this is the social media version. Seriously, do we really have to have this talk with grownups? Plus, the latest scam is telling you not to accept the friend request from Jayden Smith because he is a hacker and getting you to share that because you are thinking that is being a good citizen. Warning others is wonderful, but it is merely a prank and has been since 2009. Next, if it is too good to be true, well, it is! You see, Delta isn’t going to give you free tickets, Kroger isn’t giving you coupons with ridiculous amounts off of your groceries, and Willy Wonka isn’t giving you his chocolate factory. I hate to be the one to burst your bubble. The sad reality is this is our society. No one checks the source and there is a lot of fake news floating around (and no, this isn’t a political pun or is it?).
I am not delusional in thinking that this blog with be that powerful and miraculously people will think before they click, accept, or share. But, I am hopeful that at the very least, one will go to snopes.com to check the latest scams before they become yet, another Charlie Brown.
