Today is a day that America will never forget. As I travel back in time, it is clear how I have changed since the day terrorism touched our lives. My father was still alive and a very big part of my life. Bailey was six year old. I was on a mission to fight for every educational tool we could claim. Bryce was two. He finally was sleeping through the night which was excellent news for me, as I was exhausted. Alcoholism was running through every part of the family adding to the stress and chaos of everyday life.
Going to the airport was less stressful. I didn’t have to provide my DNA to fly. (Yes, I am dramatic, but mark my words, someday we will have to provide it.) I had the best dog in the world named Monty along with cats Pitino, BJ, Patches and Abigail, all of whom have passed over the rainbow bridge. A job as a writer hadn’t come my way, neither had my Master in Fine Arts. I was a stay-at-home mom trying to find myself.
Today, recovery runs through our family. I am making a consistent living as a writer, which is rare as a freelancer. My kids are amazing. Both are successful young men who have big heart and even bigger dreams. I am more mindful. Days, months, even years after 9/11, I was terrified to fly. Today, I am more aware of my surroundings. I realize that we aren’t untouchable. The denial exploded the day those planes flew into those buildings. I am vigilant of the present moment and how fleeting time can be. Prayer and meditation have centered me. Today, I am less self-centered and more heart-centered. I give thanks for those who constantly put their lives on the line to make our country safe. Blessings come out of tragedy, this I know. There are countless stories shared to support the claim. So, today as we remember, think about what has changed in your life and how this event transformed you.
