The average human spends five years throughout their lifetime waiting. In fact, as I write this I am waiting. There is something about the patience it takes to wait. This morning I had an 8 a.m. appointment to have my HVAC checked. It was 8:15 when he showed up and then I was told he probably didn’t have the filter to replace the existing one. Yay! More waiting.

There are varying degrees of waiting. Waiting for a doctor. Waiting for a repairman. Waiting for people to have common sense or even manners. The last one is a very long wait. Time is fleeting. Time is slow. The art of waiting requires the patience of a saint. I am not a saint.

I am not a fan of being late or making others wait for me. Chronic late arrivals who are flip with their constant inability to be on time. It’s disrespectful to me. I am mindful of a prompt arrival. My mother ingrained that quality in me. Being late makes me uncomfortable. Waiting for others makes me annoyed. Look, I get that we all run into obstacles that could deter us from getting to our destination on time, but it is those who make it a habit that really question whether I want to commit to that relationship. Time is that powerful.

Think about this. We are in a constant state of waiting. There is always something incoming. Something to look forward to and some that aren’t as pleasant. It’s how I occupy my time while I wait that is key.
